

The Mayor of Casterbridge is a tragedy about Michael Henchard, a man who impulsively sells his wife and daughter at a country fair while drunk. He vows to stop drinking for 21 years and later becomes a successful businessman and the respected Mayor of Casterbridge
The story takes place in a small woodland village called Little Hintock, and concerns the efforts of an honest woodsman, Giles Winterborne, to marry his childhood sweetheart, Grace Melbury.
